Cool mornings and shorter days are a clear sign that autumn is inevitably approaching. Over the next few months, we will not be able to enjoy the lush colours of nature, but we will be able to admire flower towers with beautiful autumn compositions. In this article, we present the most beautiful and popular autumn flowers, namely heather and chrysanthemums. To make it a little less standard, we are adding ornamental cabbage to this set. And all this in the form of flower cascades!
A flower tower in autumn – where to start?
Both in gardens and public spaces, September and October are good months for tidying up. This will allow you to take care of your plants after the summer and prepare for the cool and rainy weather. Flower towers planted with surfinias or geraniums also require attention. The condition of summer plants usually deteriorates at this time of year, so they should be removed by mid-October. This is also the perfect time to clean up your cascade flowerbed and prepare it for planting with autumn plants.
Flower-filled towers and XXL pots are usually associated with lush vegetation in intense colours. However, they also work well with autumn compositions, consisting of multicoloured heathers and chrysanthemums.

Heather and chrysanthemums – they give the flower tower a new character
No one should doubt that heather and chrysanthemums are regarded as the floral symbols of autumn. This is hardly surprising, as these plants are resistant to adverse weather conditions, including low temperatures, rainfall and even frost. Moreover, although inconspicuous, they can delight with their beautiful colours: dark and light purple, pink, white, shades of yellow and orange.

When designing flower towers, it is essential to take colour into account. Depending on your taste, you can use plants of similar colours or, on the contrary, contrasting colours. An example combination would be heather in shades of purple (light and dark) and a contrasting combination of chrysanthemums, e.g. yellow and red. Flowers selected in this way can be planted alternately next to each other on one level or by reserving one level of the flower tower for one colour alternately.
Ornamental cabbage for an even better floral cascade effect
Ornamental cabbage is becoming increasingly popular in urban space arrangements. We encounter it as an element of flower tower compositions, as well as in flower beds – planted in the ground. What makes ornamental cabbage worth planting? Although it is usually associated with a popular and frequently consumed vegetable, it has a number of advantages. Here they are:
- Unique appearance – the rosette-shaped leaves (crimped or wavy) delight with their rich and intense colours. Sunlight causes eye-catching discolouration to appear on the leaves This is typical for this plant.
- Easy to grow – as mentioned earlier, ornamental cabbage is suitable for planting both in pots and directly in the ground.
- Low requirements – this makes the plant ideal for autumn urban arrangements. It is resistant to low temperatures. It can even cope with the winter, when the thermometer drops below 0°C. It likes sunny locations, although it also grows in shady areas. However, in this case, its leaves do not have such intense colours.

There are as many as thirty types of ornamental cabbage! Of course, not all of them are suitable for planting in flower beds. Some of them are suitable for pot cultivation and even appear in cut flower arrangements. Low varieties, such as Kyoto F1, which reach a maximum height of 30 cm, are ideal for flower towers. Among the Kyoto varieties, ‘Red-Green’ and ‘Violet-Green’ (purple-green cabbages) and ‘White-Green’ with a white centre and green edges are very popular.
Autumn arrangements not only in flower towers
Seasonal plants such as heather, chrysanthemums and ornamental cabbage are not only suitable for flower cascades, but also for pots. Gianto models are part of urban arrangements that can be used successfully practically all year round. Autumn plants in XXL pots make the city space look picturesque and friendly, even in inclement weather.

The intense colours of the pots add lively accents to every square, promenade, plaza and roundabout, which can be particularly important in autumn and winter. The Gianto family of pots is characterised by a wide range of colours. You will find lush green, deep blue, hot orange and other colours, including those outside the standard colour palette.
