Germany Travel Guide – Part 6: Würzburg, flower towers and streetlamp hanging flower baskets
A Floral Dream Between Flower Towers and Flowers on Streetlights
For the sixth stop in our journey through Germany’s green cities, we head to the heart of Franconia. Würzburg — already famous for its baroque grandeur, the majestic Residence, and the historic Old Main Bridge — revealed a completely new side of itself last summer. One bursting with flowers.
The city bloomed, quite literally, with vibrant flower towers and beautifully arranged hanging baskets on lamp posts. These thoughtful little touches transformed public spaces into something more inviting, more alive — and honestly, more magical.
A City in Full Bloom
From the very first glance, Würzburg dazzles with color. Here, greenery isn’t just decoration — it’s part of the city’s identity. Especially in front of the Marienkapelle, passersby are met with towering floral sculptures that rise straight out of the historic cobblestones.
These multi-level structures, planted with cascades of petunias, geraniums, lobelias, and calibrachoa, shift and evolve each week — offering a changing natural spectacle right in the city center. But they’re more than just eye candy. They bring a gentle sense of harmony into everyday urban life.
Flower Towers – Vertical Gardens with Personality
What makes these towers so special? Their design allows for 360-degree planting, which means they bloom from every angle — like living sculptures. Unlike traditional planters, they barely take up any ground space, making them perfect for busy pedestrian zones, narrow old-town streets, or tiny urban islands.
In Würzburg, they’ve been cleverly placed in front of cafés, public buildings, and even beside the grand façade of the Residence — little pockets of green that bring balance to the stone and symmetry.
One of the most charming summer details? The hanging baskets perched high on the city’s street lamps. Overflowing with blooms in every direction, they floated above the streets like little bursts of color.
The baskets were filled with shades of pink, red, and white geraniums — a visual treat, sure, but also a vital resource for bees and pollinators trying to survive in a city landscape. These flowers didn’t just add beauty — they added life.
In a space where flowering plants are often scarce, small green gestures like these mean everything. Geraniums — often overlooked — offer nectar and direction for insects that would otherwise find nothing but concrete and asphalt.
And in the evening, when the golden glow of the lamps washes over them, those arrangements feel almost like a tiny stage — where nature and the city meet and quietly perform together.
A Bit of Würzburg to Take With You
Würzburg proves that urban greenery doesn’t have to be dull or generic. Quite the opposite — when designed with care, even small floral details can breathe new life into a space and completely shift the way it feels.
Flower towers and hanging baskets aren’t just decorative. They stand for joy, environmental awareness, and a clear sense of what kind of city this wants to be.
So next time you’re wandering through the streets — keep your eyes open. You never know when a burst of blossoms might be waiting around the corner, ready to surprise you.
Germany, Part 3: Münchberg – Modern Large Planters in a Green Style
During our journey through Germany, we visited the charming Bavarian town – Münchberg. This small town, located in a region of Upper Franconia, is known for its textile heritage and the surrounding green hills and forests. Though Münchberg is relatively small, it offers visitors tranquility, beautiful landscapes, and an authentic Bavarian atmosphere. Despite its traditional character, the town embraces innovation, surprising with its modern approach to urban space design.
In Münchberg, you can admire historic buildings and atmospheric streets, as well as carefully planned green public spaces. The town, caring for the comfort of its residents and visitors, integrates landscape architecture solutions that combine aesthetics with functionality in the urban landscape.
As a result, large planters, flower towers, and other green elements harmonize perfectly with the urban surroundings, creating a balanced space for living and relaxation. Münchberg demonstrates how even a small town can use creative solutions to make its space more welcoming and modern.
On our walk through the town, we came across impressive large Gianto Grande planters, which have become key elements in organizing the urban landscape. Positioned along the parking area, they separated it from the sidewalk and street, functioning as green-style barriers. These large planters provided structure and added both aesthetic and functional value to the public space.
Additionally, we encountered beautifully flowered towers and Plane Ring planters in Münchberg. Spread across various points of the town, these large planters brought life to the streets, adding color and a welcoming atmosphere.
An interesting feature of the Plane Ring planters is that they can serve not only in a traditional role but also as small urban meadows. Due to their low height and wide rim, they are ideal for planting wild plants, creating natural resting areas for passersby. Furthermore, their wide rim serves as an additional seating space, functioning as a bench.
This practical solution allows both residents and tourists to take a break surrounded by greenery.
It’s a great example of how large planters can enhance the quality of public space, combining functionality with a green, friendly design and added convenience in the form of seating areas.
Large planters, especially even larger ones like the Gianto Grande, are excellent as green barriers separating different spaces, such as parking lots from sidewalks or streets. This is an especially practical solution since large planters can house expansive trees that provide shade for parked cars in the summer. These types of planters not only help organize space but also bring elements of nature into the urban landscape, blending functionality with aesthetics and creating a welcoming environment for residents and users of public spaces.
Join us in our next post, where we’ll visit the town of Rödental!

Urban furniture for residents’ safety
In cities around the world, the issue of residents` safety has become one of the key urban challenges. With the rapid growth of the population living in urban areas, ensuring a safe and friendly environment has become a priority for local authorities and urban planners. One of the innovative and increasingly popular approaches to improving urban safety is the use of modern solutions in the form of designer urban furniture.
In this article, we will focus on the role of urban furniture in improving the safety of residents. We will learn about the variety of available solutions and their impact on urban space and social life. Also, we will look at examples of cities that have brought innovative urban furniture and noticed positive effects in improving public safety.
The role of urban furniture in improving public safety
Street furniture is a significant urban element, and its functionality, aesthetics and strategic placement can affect the quality of residents` life and the safety of public spaces. First of all, urban furniture, such as properly placed benches, bicycle racks or pergolas, create attractive, functional and friendly places for meetings, rest and recreation for residents. Open and friendly public spaces that provide the opportunity to spend time outdoors encourage greater social activity and participation in the life of the city. The more people use such spaces, the greater the social control, which reduces the possibility of criminal incidents.
Secondly, properly designed urban furniture can act as barriers and obstacles that make it more difficult for potential criminals to engage in undesirable activities, such as vandalism, theft or destruction of property. In addition, properly placed streetlights and lighting around street furniture improve the illumination of public spaces, which in turn deters potential offenders.
Thirdly, urban furniture plays a key role in shaping the identity of a local community. Their unique design and thoughtful location can attract tourists and residents, making public spaces more open and welcoming, which affects the sense of community and social ties. Strengthening the bonds to a place results in increased involvement of residents when it comes to caring for the safety of their surroundings.
In conclusion, urban furniture brings many benefits to public safety. It provides meeting and recreation areas that foster a greater presence of residents in public spaces, leading to more significant social control and reduced risk of crime. Its proper design as barriers and lighting elements also has the effect of reducing potential threats. At the same time, street furniture has the power to shape a city’s identity and encourage the community to actively participate in its life. Therefore, developing and investing in innovative and functional urban furniture is a key component of an effective strategy to improve safety and quality of life in the city.
Innovative street furniture – modern solutions for cities
Innovative street furniture is now a key part of urban development, integrating modern technology with functionality and aesthetics. Terra Group, a leader in the field of city furniture design and manufacturing, stands out for its innovative approach, offering unique solutions that perfectly fit the requirements of today’s urban communities.
Functionality versus aesthetics – key factors in urban furniture design
Functionality and aesthetics are two key factors that inevitably interact in the process of designing urban furniture. The right combination of these elements is not only important for meeting the practical needs of users, but also has a huge impact on the perception of public spaces by residents and tourists.
Above all, the functionality of urban furniture plays a key role in ensuring convenience and usability. Street furniture should fulfill specific tasks, such as enabling seating, relaxation, storage or waste segregation. The choice of appropriate materials and design must take into account resistance to weather conditions, intensive use and ease of maintenance. In addition, city furniture can also be equipped with additional features, such as USB chargers, Wi-Fi internet access points or photovoltaic panels, which increases its usability.
On the other hand, the aesthetics of urban furniture play an important role in creating friendly and attractive public spaces. Innovative and aesthetic design can encourage residents to use the furniture and influence the positive perception of urban space. Aesthetic street furniture adds charm and character to an area, and its carefully selected design can complement a city’s architecture, emphasizing its identity and style.
It is also important that the functionality and aesthetics of street furniture meet the needs and preferences of the local community. Including residents in the design process and consulting with them can lead to the development of furniture that really fulfil expectations of users, harmoniously blending in with the surrounding landscape. An important aspect is also the durability and quality of street furniture. Strong and solid furniture is more resistant to weather conditions and intensive use, resulting in longer life and lower maintenance costs.

Hanging floral decorations – for cities with less space to arrange
In cities with little space to arrange, creating friendly and aesthetically pleasing public areas is a significant challenge. For urban planners and architects, it is a particularly difficult task if one wants to achieve harmony between functionality and economy, as well as preserving the character of a given city. The solution that is gaining popularity and attracting attention with its originality are hanging floral decorations. The hanging Flower Towers can become not only a charming element, but also a practical tool for the development of urban spaces.
Also, they have great potential in transforming the image and atmosphere of cities, especially those with limited space, where traditional methods of arranging greenery are often limited.
Benefits of using hanging floral decorations in cities with smaller areas
The use of hanging floral decorations in cities with smaller areas brings many benefits, both for the residents and the whole city. These charming decorations are an innovative solution for urban planners and architects, who are trying to add character and beauty to public spaces, which have limited development options.
What are the key benefits of hanging floral decorations in urban space?
Revitalizing gray urban space — one of the key benefits associated with hanging flower decorations in city centers. Gray and monotonous urban spaces, consisting of concrete buildings, sidewalks and roads, can seem cold and impersonal. By adding colorful, vibrant flowers here, you can entirely change the atmosphere of the city, giving it a more pleasant feel. It’s also a great way to express opposition to the concreting of entire city centers.
Improving the health and well-being of residents and visitors — bringing plants into city centers can have a wonderful effect on the health of residents. Urban greenery, such as hanging floral decorations, plants in pots, and flower meadows, for example, have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of residents, helping to improve the quality of life in the city. Communing with nature has a scientifically proven relaxing and stress-reducing effect. Urban greenery and the presence of plants in the city center allow residents to take a break from the urban hustle and bustle and calm down for a while. Walking among floral decorations or spending time in parks can help reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and bring relief during difficult times.
Social integration and creating friendly corners — plants and floral decorations give city centers a nice and relaxing atmosphere. Urban greenery is conducive to creating pleasant spots that encourage spending time outdoors and meeting friends or family. Such places become natural meeting points where residents can spend time together, talk and integrate. In addition, they often provide an ideal backdrop for various social and cultural activities.
Ecological value of decorations for local biodiversity — the hanging Flower Towers act as a bridge between the urban environment and the natural ecosystem. They bring nature to the city, providing a place for local insects, birds and small mammals, which find shelter and food among these plants. Besides, hanging floral decorations bring variety to the urban landscape, attracting different species of insects and birds. This in turn creates an ecologically sustainable space where urban flora and fauna coexist and support each other. Importantly, the presence of floral elements encourages pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies to visit the city. These little creatures play an extremely important role in the pollination of plants, including those species that are grown in gardens and on balconies. By supporting their presence, the city contributes to pollination and the development of vegetation.
Practical aspects of bringing hanging floral decorations in cities with small areas
The introduction of hanging floral decorations in cities with smaller areas involves a number of practical aspects that need to be taken into account when planning and implementing such an initiative. Cities with limited space for development require creative solutions to maintain harmony between aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. What is worth paying attention to?
Choosing the right plant species
Choosing the right plant species is a key element in launching hanging floral decorations into cities with smaller areas. Properly selected plants are not only an added value to the aesthetics of the urban space, but also they have a significant impact on the success of the entire initiative. When selecting species, a number of factors should be taken into account, such as the climatic and soil conditions of the location, exposure to sun or shade, as well as resistance to pollution and changing urban conditions. Optimal plant selection allows you to create durable and beautiful compositions that please the eye of residents and visitors, while minimizing maintenance costs and ensuring long-lasting flowering. By selecting local and native plant species, the city can also support biodiversity and conservation, creating a sustainable urban space that is consistent with the character of a given location.
Care and maintenance of flowers for longer
Care and maintenance of floral decorations for longer are key elements contributing to the success of the Flower Towers in cities with a smaller area. Here are some key steps that will help your flowers last longer:
Regular watering: Adequate moisture is essential to keep your plants healthy and beautiful. Regular watering of flower decorations should be provided, especially during periods of drought and high temperatures. It is good to monitor the humidity of the substrate and adjust the frequency of watering to the current weather conditions, as well as the needs of the plants.
Selecting the right substrate: A well-chosen substrate is essential for healthy plant growth. In the case of hanging floral decorations, it is worth using a light and well-draining substrate that allows you to avoid excessive flooding of the roots. The addition of nutrients to the substrate, such as compost or fertilizers, will support the plants in their development.
Proper fertilization: A regular supply of nutrients is essential for healthy plant growth and long-lasting flowering. Use the right fertilizers, tailored to the plant species, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Avoid over-application of fertilizers, preventing excessive plant growth and stunted flowering.
Pruning and care: Proper pruning will control the shape of the plants, remove withered flowers and increase branching, which in turn can affect the abundance of flowering. Regular removal of withered plant parts also helps to maintain their aesthetic appearance.
Protection against pests and diseases: Monitoring plants and intervening early if pests appear are among the most important issues if you want your plants to look beautiful.

Stylish pots and the Flower Towers: the summer version of Zielona Góra
Pots from the URBANA collection from Terra Group were placed in the most recognizable places in Zielona Góra. Their size allowed for quite large plantings, so that real trees appeared in the very center of the city. These types of pots can serve as tools for dividing urban space into different zones. They can define the edges of promenades, squares or recreational areas, setting clear boundaries. In this way, URBANA pots helped to organize space and maintain order, while ensuring the comfort and safety of all pedestrians.
Old Town in Zielona Góra, Poland
On the other hand, the Flower Towers placed on the promenade highlighted the identity of the city, which is famous for its greenery and surrounding nature. Annual plants
Annual plants such as petunias, begonias, and hydrangeas must be planted at the right time of the year. Such flowers are distinguished by the fact that they bloom beautifully, decorating urban spaces. When deciding to plant annual plants in large pots, one must take into account that in the next season it will be necessary to repeat this procedure. Unfortunately, the flowers below do not last long — but that’s their nature! Although such plantings have to be repeated every year, the spectacular effect one gets is definitely worth it.

Tuberous begonia
Lantana
Dichondra
Solanum
Mandevilla
Coleus plectrantus
Hydrangea

Bulb plants
Who doesn’t like the sight of tulips or crocuses heralding the coming spring? Bulbs are distinguished by their beautiful fragrance and colors, so it’s no wonder that they are one of the most popular flowers. In most cases, these are plants for one season, but sometimes, if we properly protect the bulbs, we can grow beautiful flowers from them the next year. Below you will find a list of our favorite bulbs used for planting in large pots:
Tulip
Hyacinth
Narcissus
Crocus
Decorative garlic
Muscari
Scilla
Kaiser’s crown
Lilies

Perennials
Perennials are plants that grow for many years. In colloquial terms, they are flowers of all seasons; in fact, the most common perennials are ornamental plants that are supposed to last more than one season. Among the perennials, one can find a lot of unique plants, perfect for flowering urban spaces or creating amazing compositions in large pots on the terrace. Some lovely perennials worth recommending are:

Verbena

Trees for pots outside
There is a lot of space around you where there are no trees? Concrete courtyards and squares do not have to be gray at all—just fill them with colorful pots in XXL size. In such large pots, you can easily plant bigger trees that will give some little shade on summer afternoons and bring greenery to the city center. An interesting new trend is planting palm trees in XXL pots—such a tree can conjure up an exotic atmosphere even in a cool Polish town!

Common hornbeam
Black locust

Palm trees
Ornamental grasses in pots
It turns out that planting flowers is not the only way to bring greenery to the city. Ornamental grasses are also great for this role. They look marvellous in XXL pots, both in a composition with other plants and alone. It is worth delving into the subject of ornamental grasses and looking for varieties that will be most compatible with our sense of aesthetics. The Amur silvergrass or Chinese pennisetum will look great in pots with neutral, earthy colors. Such natural shades will ensure a friendly atmosphere in every city. Below, you can find a list of our favorite ornamental grasses for planting in XXL pots:

However, if you want to prepare decorative plantings for autumn, the composition of ornamental cabbage will be a hit. You will find a variety of colors and cabbage types, which in combination will make an even greater impression than classic spring flowers. In addition, cabbage does not require demanding care, making it ideal for urban spaces or on the terraces of restaurants and hotels.

Winter – Christmas trees and seasonal flower containers
The frosty season can also be spectacular. Get inspired – the Flower Tower in 5 versions
The Flower Tower is made up of many levels with dozens of plant seedlings. It gives almost endless arrangement possibilities. What kind of plants should we choose so that they look great throughout the season? What colors should we choose so that they fit perfectly into the surroundings? One should answer such questions before getting flowers. Although it may seem trivial, the excess of options can cause quite a headache.
Fortunately, you can always take a look at already created compositions to get inspiration. That is why we have prepared some interesting ways of planting the Flower Towers.
Contrasting colors and different plant varieties are the key to success.
Flower mishmash
Decorating the Flower Tower? No problem! Just select a few plants, preferably in different, contrasting colors, and plant them in loosely spaced groups. Is it really that simple? Not completely. The trick is to create such a composition that the aesthetic mishmash does not become a mess.
You will achieve a good effect if you use various colors of one plant to decorate the Flower Tower. Such a combination will always look nice, regardless of the plant’s arrangement. It is good to put individual plant varieties in groups. In this way, it will be possible to obtain a unique and aesthetic composition.
You will achieve a good effect if you use various colors of one plant to decorate the Flower Tower.
If you want the Flower Tower to look more avant-garde and colorful, go for a contrast. However, you have to be very careful not to overdo it. A good approach is to create a simple base and add some vivid elements to it. For example, the Flower Tower decorated with layers of colorful petunia can be interlaced with lime ipomea. This combination is a recipe for an eye-catching composition.

The Layered Flower Tower
If you prefer simplicity and order to extravagance, planting layers will hit the spot. There is one rule, the plant or its color changes with each level. The recipe is simple and proven. As you can see, the Flower Tower with plantings arranged in layers does not have to look boring or bland. Contrasting colors and a variety of plants are the key to success.
Normally, or maybe diagonally?
An alternative to the plants arranged in standard layers is a composition with diagonal layers. The variant requires a bit more practice when planting, but the final effect is worth the effort. The Flower Tower, decorated with white, pink, purple fuchsia, as well as lime ipomea, creates a cheerful, fairy-tale composition.

A winter transformation of a flower tower
For many people, Christmas doesn’t exist without a Christmas tree, also in public spaces. What to do though if the square in front of the town hall lacks trees, and bringing to it any live specimen is neither economical nor ecological solution? Contrary to what one might expect, Christmas does not have to go without decorations!
Christmas covers for the Flower Towers are a solution, which makes it possible to deal with standing or hanging Flower Towers in winter and protect them against snow, rain or wind. They are specially developed covers, in a shape of a Christmas tree cone or a ball ( for street lamps ), and thanks to them, spring and summer decorations do not have to be removed after the season, therefore, expenses for their storage can be eliminated.

The Christmas covers for the standing and hanging Flower Towers go in a few sizes, therefore, they can be adjusted to already existing decorations, which will become additional ballast for them. Weather in winter eliminates low-quality solutions from urban spaces. The solid construction of the Christmas trees from the TerraChristmas collection resists severe weather conditions as they are firmly fixed to the ground.

What about…ornamental grasses?
This is the question that was asked when arranging this year’s greenery in the center of Świnoujście (Poland) and along the seaside boulevard. The answer turns out to be unequivocal – this is a great idea! We are sure that this unusual concept will enter the canon of the most popular flowers.
This year, Świnoujście (Poland) was dominated by a twofold approach to urban greenery: on the one hand, tried-and-tested as well as popular types of flowers were chosen, and on the other … residents together with guests were surprised by an unconventional solution for planting the Flower Towers. The cascade constructions were filled with lush ornamental grasses – until now reserved primarily for planting directly in the ground, in XXL pots or flower boxes mounted on railings.
This “natural experiment” turned out to be a full success – the decorations do not only look great, but also they will survive until late autumn, without any need to replace plants with seasonal specimens.
In the seaside town, popular flowers were planted too – the tallest Flower Towers were planted with begonia and fuchsia, flower boxes were filled with ipomea in a duo with surfinia, and the concrete XXL pots, among others, were planted with more and more popular canna.
Interestingly, in Świnoujście one could notice a trend related to flower meadows – because who said that it is impossible to arrange them in the Flower Towers? The lower Flower Towers were planted with meadow specimens that attract pollinators and, what is more, they help to preserve biodiversity. The unique, eye-catching visual effect does not need to be mentioned!
It is a wonderful place. Not only does it have 2 main squares but also it is one of the most populous locality in Slovakia. Moreover, it also has the longest pedestrian zone in the whole country. This is Žilina – a Slovakian city which has just gained its next advantage – beautiful flower towers in the heart of the city centre.
Žilina is very popular among the Polish tourists – situated only 77 kilometres from Cieszyn, it has a very convenient rail connection which in addition encourages people to visit this charming place even more. It may be a fantastic idea for a weekend and believe us – there is a lot to see!
On the longest pedestrian zone in Slovakia, there are two bustling squares with picturesque tenement buildings and a fountain. You will find there also a lot of restaurants with local rarities and some idyllic space to relax. In the lovely centuries-old place, you cannot miss the floral decoration which introduces and emphasizes the charming colours of the squares.
The flower towers are situated in the most representative part of the city – nearby the stairs which connect those two already mentioned squares. The main market called Mariánske námestie is also full of floral compositions in various colour shades. Those 2 meter high half models of Flower Towers can be seen also close to the town hall – the special models of the products can be easily situated along walls without any space loss.
We strongly recommend visiting Žilina as it may be an interesting place for people who appreciate historic architecture, tranquillity, positive energy as well as beautiful floral decorations.

Think pink! The Flower Towers planted with pink flowers look beautiful! And what else is behind such a great effect?
This is the result of several components: first of all – tools. Particularly it means that the Flower Towers have an open-cross section.
Every ring of the construction is put on one after the other, so that the inner space can be open for roots and water. Plants can fully grow and thus reach impressive sizes.
See the video below:
Plantings in the hanging Flower Towers are also worth consideration. A model dedicated for street lamps has got a double-bottom system thanks to which a plant takes water whenever it needs. The effect? An exceptionally healthy, and attractive composition, not only at the pavement level but also high above it! In this way, an exceptionally attractive composition with intensive colors is created, making the city look as if it were seen through pink-colored glasses…and it is commonly known that some colors have a really positive impact on our lives!
